The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) program is a series of tests for the building HVAC and envelope to evaluate the energy performance of a home. HERS Verification also addresses construction defects and poor equipment installation.
HERS verification compares the built home to minimum code standards for performance such as the California Title 24 Energy Code or other local energy code standards. In California, there are mandatory HERS tests that must be conducted on all single family and low-rise multifamily buildings for code compliance, based on the climate zone of the project. HERS Verification is also required for many green certification programs such as LEED-Homes, Energy Star New Home, and Enterprise Green Communities. HERS verification includes testing of the following items:
- Duct leakage
- Blower Door / Envelope leakage
- Quality Insulation Inspections
- Cooling Coil Airflow
- Fan Watt Draw
- Energy Efficiency Ratio
- Thermostatic Expansion Valve
- Refrigerant Charge
- Kitchen Exhaust
The HERS Verification process includes testing a sample of residential units (one of each unit type plus sample groups of similar unit types) to verify the system performance as documented by the installing contractors. The results of the HERS Verification are then submitted to the registry for the authority having jurisdiction for code compliance and/or for achieving a green certification.
