The California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) is Part 11 of twelve parts of the building regulations to the California Code of Regulations, Title 24. The purpose of this code is to improve public health, safety and general welfare by enhancing the design and construction of buildings through the use of building concepts having a reduced negative impact or positive environmental impact and encouraging sustainable construction practices in the following categories:

  • Planning and design
  • Energy efficiency
  • Water efficiency and conservation
  • Material conservation and resource efficiency
  • Environmental quality

CALGreen requirements apply to the planning, design, operation, construction, use and occupancy of every newly constructed building or structure, unless otherwise indicated in this code, throughout the State of California. CALGreen cannot substitute or be identified as meeting the certification requirements of any green building program.

CALGreen requires new construction projects and major renovation to submit documentation to the building department in order to get a building permit, as well as final reporting to the Building Inspector in order to get a Certificate of Occupancy at the completion of construction. The required documentation includes materials specifications, waste management plans and logs, and commissioning (for projects over 10,000 square feet).
