Benchmarking

The practice of comparing quantitative data (usually performance metrics) against another set of data, and can be done for a variety of measurements, such as greenhouse gas emissions, solar energy output, paper products use, etc. By benchmarking—accounting, measuring, and tracking—owners can compare a building’s key performance metrics to similar buildings to determine a building’s cost reduction, energy reduction, or green label potential. Key performance metrics include electricity, gas, and water. Total energy consumption, cost, and intensity are also calculated as part of the benchmarking analysis.

Measurement of the utility consumption of a property or building for a specified interval assuming normal operations. Typically compares a building’s key performance metrics to similar buildings to determine a building’s cost reduction, energy reduction, or green label potential.
